THOUGHTS FROM CAMPAIGN FOR CHRIST 2008
"Discipleship"
SAVOR THE SAVIOR (C. Beatty) John 6:54ff
· Eat Him – TROGOS – means to gnaw or slowly chew – savor.
· Drink Him – Thayer says “figuratively, to receive into the soul what serves to refresh, strengthen, and nourish it unto life eternal” (John 7:37; 18:11; 1 Corinthians 10:21)
· Not everyone believes and follows but Jesus is looking for those who will
· The Disciple leans in close to Him, longs for Him, and is loyal to Him
LEARNING THE FACTS, GETTING USED TO THAT WAY, AND ENTERING THE EXPERIENCE (K. Allen)
· Peter learned the facts including “love your enemies” (Matthew 5:44)
· The facts weren’t enough as he quickly resorted to the sword (John 18:10)
· He got used to that way sleeping between his own enemies (Acts 12:5-7)
· He entered the experience offering salvation to enemies of God (Acts 2:36-39; 10:25-11:18)
DISCIPLESHIP AND SELF DENIAL (H. Goins)
Mark 8:34-38
· v. 33 says, “Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.” KJV
· The road to heaven passes through Calvary with a cross
· Luke 9:23 says this occurs daily “And he said unto all, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” ASV
· Philippians 2:7 we should take upon ourselves a low reputation and be a bond servant
· Philippians 3:7-8 shows us that we should “suffer loss”
TEACHING THEM TO OBEY (D. Chambers)
Matthew 28:19-20
· “Go” implies making disciples outside of the church building
· “make disciples” is a schooling process
· Disciples are baptized not those ignorant of Jesus but don’t want to go to hell
· We don’t teach them everything; we teach them to obey everything
· The Family and the Family of God are involved in the same 2 things: Reproduction and Growth
· Discipleship is not a program but a command - We are all ministers
PARENTING (D. Webb, D. Chambers)
Proverbs 22:16
· 1 Corinthians 4:15 “For though ye have ten thousand tutors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I begat you through the gospel.” (cf. Philemon 1:10; 1 Timothy 1:2)
1 Thessalonians 2 – As a caring mother and as a loving father so we must care for one another by nurturing, loving, protecting, praying, training, and imparting our very own lives.
